Thanks for your efforts to contribute for Sichuan earthquake
victims. Last week we joined “2008 Sichuan Earthquake Relief
Committee by Oversea Chinese” to promote fundraisings using SVTN
foundation. Now SJTU-SV is also ready to accept online donation too.
A few donation related information are updated below.
1. May 13, American Red Cross has dedicated link to donate funds to
“CHINA EARTHQUAKE RELIEF”. CNReviews interviewed with Christy Feig,
Director of International Communications, American Red Cross.
Question: “Does 100% of funds donated pass to the Red Cross Society
of China?” Answer: “The American Red Cross takes donor intent very
seriously. As a policy, no more than 9% of donated money is used for
management expenses…the rest goes toward the designation.”
2. May 15, American Red Cross is prepared to provide $10 million to
support relief efforts following the devastating 7.9 magnitude
earthquake in China’s Sichuan province. This contribution will
assist the Red Cross Society of China, whose employees and
volunteers have been helping survivors since the earthquake struck
on Monday, May 12. [On May 12, it allocated $240K to RCSC]
3. May 16, Cisco Systems announced that it has increased its initial
donation from $250,000 to $1 million for the victims of the
earthquake, which occurred in China's Sichuan province on May 12,
2008. Cisco Foundation will also match employee contributions up to
$1,000,000 and the TOSA Foundation will match employee donations up
to $250,000. So for up to $250,000 employee donations, each dollar
will get two dollars’ gift matching. Beyond that to $1,000,000, each
dollar gets one dollar gift matching. These funds will go to the
American Red Cross for transfer to the Red Cross Society of China.
There are many ways
to give. The advantage with ARC is that it is one of the top well-accepted matching charity organizations in USA. Since many companies have
donation matching programs which effectively double or over than
whatever you contribute, please check your company's policies and
take the advantage of it if available.

As you have learned one
of the worst earthquakes in decades struck central China yesterday,
UCAA is calling for donation to the 5/12 China Earthquake Relief
2008 fund.
Since we are not granted as a 501(c) organization yet, I have been
contacting
American Red Cross today about the donations to
"International Relief Fund" for China's Earthquake Relief and got my
questions answered on donation matching and tax deduction. There are
many companies in US that will be matching the donations to
pre-approved list of 501(c) organizations.
American Red Cross is on top of the list. So going with them
will help to get doubled or tripled donations of your contribution
for this relief.
Here are the steps.
1. Fill the
Donation Form with a check payable to "American
Red Cross" and the gift matching form from your company
if it is available,
then send them to our treasurer,

2. UCAA will forward all donation forms and checks to
American Red Cross after sorting the donations by school/org

American Red Cross will send individual tax-deductible
receipt directly to you with their Tax ID.
4. With your submitted form, American Red Cross will follow up the
gift matching request for you. With certain company's gift matching
program, you may need to bring a copy of the receipt to e-file for
gift matching donation (for example I-Give Program)
5. Report your tax-deductible donation at tax time next year
We'll send a donation summary back to your organization and report
total amount to Red Cross Society of
China.
